What is Human Development Index. The Human Development Index (HDI) is a single index measure that aims to record the three key dimensions of human development: access to knowledge, a decent standard of living, and long and healthy life. In other words, the human development index is practiced to measure how development has improved human life.
Between 1990 and 2018, India’s HDI value increased by 50 per cent (from 0.431 to 0.647), which places it above the average for countries in the medium human development group (0.634) and above the average for other South Asian countries (0.642). Human development index calculated and presented in Human Development Report, 2011 are given in Table 39.2. It will be seen from this table that for 187 countries Human Development Index (HDI) for 2011 has been prepared. In 2011, HDI for India was 0.547 with its overall ranking of 134 in 2011 which is indeed a very low position. However, trends for the last three decades indicate that India has raised its HDI score at an annual average rate of 1.42%, almost a third higher than the 1% growth clocked by developing countries as a whole.
