These balls of papery, veined, little eggs are whelk eggs, large, slow-moving sea snails that live in our waters. They have sometimes more orangey or beige than white depending on how old they are. Johann recognized the egg case coming out of the whelk when it came up in the net and pointed it out. A rare find indeed.

Strings of these connected egg capsules are usually one to three feet in length, comprised of up to 160 capsules, each containing almost 100 eggs. The mother whelk anchors one end of the string onto rocks, shells, or sand on the sea floor for safety.
